Salvin's Albatross is part of the Shy Albatross complex and is regarded by some authorities to be a separate species.
The head and neck of the adult Salvin's Albatross is intermediate in colour between Shy/White-capped (very pale) and Chatham Albatross (dark grey).
Over 90% of the population breed on the Bounty Islands, with approximately 1200 pairs on The Snares and a few pairs on Crozet Island. Estimates of the breeding population on the Bounties have declined from 76,500 pairs in 1978 to only 30,750 pairs being counted in the1990's.
